IELTS SPEAKING. DAILY ROUTINE

IELTS SPEAKING

DAILY ROUTINE

Speaking part 1.

Example:

– What do you do an average day?
– What is your normal daily day?
– Can you describe your typical day?
– What you usually do at weekends?
Formula: “What do you normally/usually do?”
– Say what you do at the time the examiner ask you.
– How often you do these things.

Grammar Focus:
1. Adverbs of frequency.
• Adverbs that go after the subject and before the verb: always, often, never, almost never, rarely, hardly ever.
E.g. I almost never play football.
I hardly ever study Japanese.
Note: Almost never, hardly ever and rarely mean almost the same thing.
• Adverb that can go before or after the subject: usually, normally, and sometimes.
E.g. Usually I get up at 7:30 a.m.
I usually get up at 7:30 a.m.
2. Simple present and Times of day
– The present simple is used to describe what we do every day or very frequently.
– The present simple is often used together with times of day.
• At + hour + o’clock: I often get up at 8 o’clock.
• At + dawn/ noon/ midnight: I always have lunch at noon
• At + hour + a.m./ in the morning: I start to study at 8:30 a.m./ in the morning.
• At + hour + p.m./ in the evening/ afternoon: I often have dinner at 7:30 p.m./ in the evening.
• At/on weekend: I often get up late at/on weekend.
– Note: In everyday English, the 12-hour clock system is the most commonly used time notation. Therefore, with 23:00 you should say 11o’ clock or 11 p.m., not 23 o’clock.
3. Sequence makers
•  Before/ after/ When + N/ Ving,....: Before going to bed, I usually find something to read or listen to music for about 30 minutes.

•  Before/ After/ When S + V, .... Before I go to bed, I get all my books ready for the next morning.

•  After that/ Next/ And then,...: After that, I help mom with her housework.

Speaking #2: Describe your typical day. Sample:

I am still a student in elementary school, and I would like to tell you about my daily routine.

Every morning, I get up early, mostly at around 6:30 am and take a shower. The morning shower makes me ready to take the challenges of the day! I eat my breakfast and then get ready for school. I reach my school roughly at 7:30 am and attend the classes till 4:20 pm. I eat my lunch at around 1:00 pm at the school cafeteria. I usually spend some time chatting with my classmates after classes and my mom or dad pick me up at around 4:40 pm. After coming home, I often go for a walk around the neighborhood or sometimes simply take some rest if I feel tired. Sometimes I play football with my friends.

In the evening, I have dinner with my family, have a break about 15 minutes and then concentrate on my studies. I usually do my homework of different subjects from school like Math, history, biology and the like. When all my homework is done, I can relax. Listening to music or watch my favorite TV channel for about 45 minutes is my favorite. Then, I always write my blog in English because I think it's fun and helps me get better with my English. Before I go to bed, I get all my books ready for the next day, brush my teeth and read something. I read for around 30 minutes then fall asleep.

I have been following this routine for the last 2 years. If I do not have classes or if I have holidays, I go through a different routine which includes watching movies, playing computer games, hanging out with friends etc.

I enjoy the morning shower, evening walks and my blogs very much among the activities in a day of my life. Sometimes, playing football with my friends is thoroughly exciting and entertaining.
